QCash vs. BNPL

As credit unions evolve their digital offerings and seek ways to meet their members’ lending needs, many are exploring Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) programs alongside small-dollar lending solutions like QCash. While these options may appear similar at a glance, they serve different purposes and support distinct member needs. Understanding these differences can help credit unions evaluate how each solution might fit within their portfolio and their broader financial-wellness strategy.

The Role of QCash

QCash offers a credit-union-originated small-dollar loan designed to help members navigate life’s everyday financial challenges. Members typically use QCash loans for unexpected or essential expenses, such as auto repairs, medical bills, utilities or short-term cash gaps between paychecks. QCash loans may also be used for planned purchases. Members make loan payments directly to their credit union, keeping them within the credit union ecosystem.

Unlike point-of-sale financing, QCash provides access to funds that can be used whenever and wherever financial support is needed. Members apply directly through their credit union’s digital banking platform and, if approved, receive funds in their account in less than 60 seconds. The automated lending solution is inclusive of the credit union’s entire membership by basing loan decisions on the member’s relationship with the credit union, using account history, deposit activity and other relationship-based data points, rather than their credit score. Credit unions are able to set eligibility criteria and then let QCash take care of the rest. Criteria may also be adjusted at any time as credit union goals or membership needs evolve.

The Role of Buy Now, Pay Later

Buy Now, Pay Later is a form of point‑of‑sale installment financing that allows consumers to split the cost of a specific purchase into a set number of payments. These plans often offer interest-free payments when made on time, though fees or other costs may apply depending on the provider. A member’s credit score may be factored in when determining eligibility for BNPL offers.

BNPL is often embedded directly into merchant checkout experiences, whether online or in-store, and is tied directly to a particular purchase. However, there are solutions that allow credit unions to offer BNPL to members on certain eligible purchases made using the credit union’s debit or credit cards after the purchase has been made, thus converting a one-time payment into an installment loan with the credit union. BNPL is commonly used for retail items such as apparel, electronics, travel, groceries and household goods[1]. For members making planned or impulse purchases, BNPL can offer convenience and short-term budgeting flexibility at the point of sale or soon after the purchase has been made.

Rather than being redundant, QCash and BNPL support different moments in a member’s financial life, and both may reduce reliance on high-cost external alternatives and keep more financial activity within the credit union. BNPL can help members manage planned or impulse purchases at point of sale, while QCash can be used for planned purchases but also may serve a broader need by being there when life happens and often without warning.

QCash is not designed to compete with BNPL — it solves a different problem. While BNPL helps members make purchases, QCash helps members navigate life.
